OFFENSE

Okeene returns five starters on offense including quarterback Bryson Jinkens (6-0, 145, Sr.). Jinkens threw for 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2019 and should have similar or better production this year. Head coach Reese Brickman takes over the program after spending three years as an assistant coach. “I am humbled and very excited to lead the Whippet program moving forward,” said coach Brickman. “Being a former Whippet myself, I’m looking forward to building on the tradition of our football program and teaching our young men what it takes to be a champion on and off the field. Go Blue!” Coach Brickman wants this offense to throw the ball around giving his playmakers opportunities to do what they do best. Cole Schmidt (6-2, 150, Sr.) was injured last season but did see action in three games. Schmidt had 17 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown in limited action. Tight end Miles Howe (6-2, 190, Sr.) figures into the equation as well. Starting center Sam Halverson (6-2, 250, Jr.) spent the last two seasons at guard and center.

DEFENSE

Coach Brickman wants sound defense in alignment and technique. Cornerback Cole Schmidt brings those qualities to the field. Schmidt had 24 tackles, three interceptions and one fumble recovery last year. Howe is another player with solid fundamentals. The defensive end made 64 tackles a year ago. Keyon Brooks (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Carson Osterhout (6-0, 150, So.) are two players the coaching staff is ready to see light things up. Both players accounted for nearly 50 tackles each and multiple tackles for a loss. Look for Jinkens to play in the secondary with Kale Shaloy (6-0, 150, So.) at corner. Shaloy started six games as a freshman and recorded 20 tackles.
