FNB Hooker

Hooker High School senior Cole Cathcart had taken a three-year break from football when he returned to the field for his last year of high school.

“This season was a success. I came out after a break of three years and picked it up with no problem,” Cathcart said. “I achieved several honors along the way, too.”

Cathcart played safety and wide receiver on his football team, plays point guard in basketball, and is a pitcher and short stop in baseball.

He attributes part of his success to a work ethic that has seen huge amounts of time spent on training and practice, sometimes outside of his school sports programs.

“I have spent hours upon hours working specific skills as well as taking my time and money to be involved in summer camps and traveling teams to enhance my ability,” Cathcart said.

Another part of his success comes from the influence of his family, who Cathcart said push him to work harder and harder to improve.

“My parents and brother support me through everything I do, and they’re never satisfied with my performance, which pushes me to be an all-around better person and athlete,” Cathcart said.

There’s also his advanced math teacher, Mr. Davis, who doesn’t simply teach math, but social skills as well.

“Mr. Davis has to be my favorite teacher,” he said. “Other than math, he has taught me how to interact with fellow students in a good, joking and positive way.”

All of Cathcart’s work on improving himself applies to both his athletic achievements and his day-to-day life. That’s part of being an athlete of character, he said.

“It’s an honor when hard work pays off – and doing the right thing for your team is always better in the end,” he said.
