Success is not just something that an athlete stumbles upon. It is a result of many hours of practice and preparation. But as Alva High School’s Austin Reed knows, there is one key attribute of any successful athlete.

“Hard work has always been what keeps me and others successful in our sports,” he said. “You have to put in the work if you want to reap the rewards.”

Reed, a senior, is a member of the Goldbugs basketball, baseball, and football teams.

Along with his sports, he is also a member of the Student Council and also serves as a class officer.

Two people that have always been there to support Austin are also who he looks up to as role models. “My grandparents have always been my biggest fans,” he said. “I can always count on them to be cheering me on, whether they have made it to the game or not. There is also a player that I look up to and strive to be like and that is Austin Reeves, a guard at the University of Oklahoma. He is a hard worker and has earned his place on a division one basketball team.”

Reed says that he strives to be an example to others, and being a character athlete shows that. “Character to me is always plugging night in and night out,” he said. “It’s not only your actions and personality on the court that keeps a team’s morale up, but it is just as important off the court. Keeping everyone focused and being a leader is key to our locker room.”

Algebra teacher and Alva girls basketball coach, Dusty Horn, is who Austin says is his favorite teacher. “He would tell me about how things were during the three-peat championships,” he stated. “I would always take bits and pieces away from that.”
