Mooreland’s John Sturgill – Athlete Spotlight Presented by The Wise Agency Inc.
Mooreland High School senior John Sturgill is a triple threat: he plays as a center/defensive end in football, a small forward in basketball, and a third baseman for the Bearcats baseball team.
“I’ve played those three sports for as long as I can remember,” Sturgill said.
Sturgill and his football teammates finished 8-6 for the season with a 4-3 record and fourth place finish in the district. He hopes to find similar success in his other two sports.
“We had a great football season going all the way to quarterfinals,” Sturgill said. “We’ll have to wait and see about baseball but we expect to keep rolling.”
Sturgill attributes his drive for achievement, athletic and otherwise, to his father, who provides Sturgill with a model.
“My dad is my biggest influence and role model,” he said. “He’s showed me what it takes to be successful.”
Sturgill also cited his teacher “Mrs. K” as an influence.
“She taught me that everything is earned and never given,” he said.
Speaking of role models, Sturgill said being a senior on his respective sports teams gave him a certain amount of obligation as an example for other players to follow.
“Being a senior presented itself with a lot more responsibility than I would have expected,” Sturgill said. “I’ve always felt that I’m being looked up to, and I always try to carry myself that way.”
For Sturgill, the most important part of sportsmanship and character is honesty.
“A character athlete means to never cheat yourself or your teammates,” he said.
As for what’s ahead, Sturgill said he hopes to continue his athletic achievements into higher education and beyond.
“If the opportunity presented itself, I would no doubt keep playing into college,” he said.
